Little League Softball makes history with state tourney appearance.

The Alexandria Little League 8-9-10s softball team made history after earning its inaugural spot in the July 2024 Virginia State tournament.

The accomplishment is a milestone for both Alexandria Little League’s softball program and the City of Alexandria. After debuting a softball team in the All-Stars tournament last year, Alexandria is now set to compete in its first-ever State Tournament.

The team is under the guidance of Head Coach David Zand, with Laynee Buckels and Leanne Buckels rounding out the coaching staff.

“The Alexandria Little League 8-9-10s softball team has showcased remarkable skill and teamwork this season,” said Little League president Laura Engle. “They have overcome challenges and exceeded expectations. Their passion for the game is pivotal in advancing girls’ softball in Alexandria and serves as inspiration for future generations of young female athletes in Alexandria.”

The State Tournament will be held in McLean from July 11 to July 16, where the Alexandria Little League 8-9-10s will represent Alexandria as they aim for the State title.

“This year we entered seven all-star teams - five baseball and two softball,” Engel said. “Three of these seven – possibly four since one is still competing – are headed to state tournaments. This is very exciting for the city and especially for these players.”

City to Host Little League State Tournament July 5-10

Alexandria Little League, in partnership with Virginia District 4, will host the Intermediate State Little League Tournament July 5-10 at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

Featuring teams of players aged 13 and younger from across Virginia, Alexandria’s own Intermediate team earned their spot in the tournament after an undefeated run in the local District 4 tournament. They secured the championship with a decisive 10-6 victory over Arlington American in the finals on June 25.

Manager Mike Coughlin attributes the success of the team to their teamwork and positive attitudes.

“The players say ‘together’ to the coaches and each other before every game,” Caughlin said. “They have fun, they practice hard together, they battle together and they won the District Championship together. This team-first attitude has made it fun to be part of this team for everyone involved.”

Joining Alexandria’s team in the tournament are district champions from across the state, including: District 3: Broadway Community Little League; District 5: Huguenot Little League; District 6: Cavalier Manor Little League; District 7: Hampton York Little League; District 8: Central Accomack Little League; District 9: Woodlawn Little League; District 12: Roanoke City Little League; and District 15: Spotsylvania County Little League.

The tournament kicks off on Friday, July 5 at Big Simpson Field at 4 p.m. Quadruple headers will follow on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at Little Simpson Field. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on July 9, with the finals scheduled for July 10.

The winner of the Virginia State tournament will advance to the Southeast Region Tournament in Kernersville, N.C., scheduled for July 19-22.
