‘Banking on Our Future’

Chairman, Founder and CEO of Operation Hope John Hope Bryant gave a special presentation to the afterschool math students at Hammond Middle School on March 29. Starting out with the theme of respect of each other and oneself, Bryant dove into the source of real wealth: that which is within each person. Bryant initiated a program “Banking on Our Future” to foster dignity and hope and teach financial literacy and economic self-sufficiency to low-income communities in the U.S., South Africa and Haiti. Twelve Hammond Middle School students stood before their teachers, classmates, School Board members and administrators Feb. 1 as they gave a musical performance using their own hand-crafted cigar box guitars. As a result of an after-school program sponsored by Alexandria City Public Schools and the Alexandria Court Services Unit, several middle school youth proudly displayed the culmination of four months of work building their instruments.

When students arrived at Hammond Middle School for the first day of classes in the fall of 2009, they were stepping into three different schools: Hammond 1, Hammond 2 and Hammond 3.

Brief: Back to Two Middle Schools

Following a six-month study by its Middle Schools for Tomorrow Workgroup, the Alexandria School Board unanimously approved restructuring the city’s five middle schools on two campuses back into two middle schools. As part of a plan to improve student achievement, George Washington Middle School would be formed from the current GW 1 and 2 middle schools and Francis C. Hammond Middle School would be formed from the current Hammond 1, 2 and 3 middle schools.

Let the Music Play

In support of students enrolled in music classes throughout the city, First Night Alexandria announced contributions to the music programs at three Alexandria City Public schools. During a recent pyramid concert performed by the bands, orchestras and choirs of Francis Hammond and George Washington Middle Schools and T.C. Williams High School, First Night Alexandria presented contributions totaling $3,000 to support the music programs at the three schools.

T.C. hosts inaugural alumni baseball game.

The T.C. Williams High School baseball program played host to the inaugural Titans Alumni Baseball Game June 2 when a total of 36 players reunited with old friends and played a seven-inning game before a sellout crowd at Eugene Simpson Field in Alexandria.
